< back to MGN home page ![]() What is the history of MGN? How does it work? Mega Game Nite started as a joint meetup between Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Social Fun and Boston Cards and Conversation in September 2009. Although the event had another name, it had the same format as it does today, and was also held at the Prudential Center. Although that evening was a dreary and rainy, we still had 40 people come to this first event. It was so popular that we have been doing them on a semi-regular basis ever since! Today, we have a number of organizations who participate in the event, and they have discovered that not only is it a fun way to play games, but a great opportunity to meet members from other Meetup groups. Recently, we have extended invitation to the general public, so that all can share and participate in the fun! MGN is an open format event -- people are welcome to bring their favorite card and board games, join a group of other attendees, and play. One of the great things about these events is that we have so many people, every game type is represented. Most people come, walk around to see the various games being played, and find a group that they enjoy playing with. If you are a member of C&C, you can see some pictures of previous MGNs: Meetup Game Nite (September 11, 2009) Meetup Game Nite 2 (October 16, 2009) Meetup Game Nite 3 (November 20, 2009) Meetup Game Nite 4 (January 8th, 2010) Meetup Game Nite 5 (March 12th, 2010) Meetup Game Nite 6 (June 18th, 2010) Meetup Game Nite 7 (September 17, 2010) Meetup Game Nite 8 (January 14, 2011) Mega Game Nite 9 (March 18th, 2011) Mega Game Nite X (January 27, 2012) I thought this event was called Meetup Game Nite. Why the name change? We've changed the name of this event for two reasons:
Are children welcome? We play in a fun, family-friendly environment. Kids of all ages are welcome. How long does the event last? Can I come late? The event formally starts around 6:30pm, but it many members come late, so don't be discouraged if you can't make it when it begins. We play until the Prudential Food Court closes, somewhere between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. After the event closes, many people move to one of the many restaurants in Prudential Center to continue the evening. It's a great night that you don't want to end! What places are there to eat in Prudential Center? When it comes to eating dinner, or having a snack, there are a ton of options for you at Prudential Center. As we play in the Food Court, there are many places to eat within a stone's throw of an event. Based on all the pizza and ice cream we see players eating, many people like Pizzeria Regina and Ben and Jerrys :) Do I need to know how to play any games? MGN is as much about the people as it is about the games -- you don't have to be an expert in any game to participate. If you are willing to learn new games and meet new people, you'll have a great time. What is this Mafia game I keep hearing about? At the end of every MGN, we play a couple games of Mafia. Mafia is a live-action role-playing game that is a favorite at large events and game conventions. It is simple to play, and fun whether you are watching or participating. Players are secretly assigned roles: either "mafia", who know each other; or "townspeople", who know only the number of mafia amongst them. During the night phase of the game, the Mafia choose an innocent to kill. During the day phase, all players debate the identities of the Mafia and vote to kill someone whom the majority suspect. Players are eliminated until either all mafia are killed or the mafia outnumber the innocents. If you come, it's recommended you play at least one game of Mafia. Here's some more information about the game. Is there parking available? Street parking on Bolyston Street and the surrounding streets are available, but it is very limited, especially on a Friday night. Your best best will be to park at the Prudential Center garage, $12 with validation at any store or food vendor. For more information about parking at Prudential Center, visit their parking rates page. A map showing the parking garage entrances is here. The cheapest and most convenient way to enjoy MGN is to carpool with a couple of friends -- when you split the cost of parking, it is cheaper than the parking and taking the subway. How can I get to the event via public transportation? If you are coming in via the subway, you have a number of great options:
Yes, we'd love to have you :) The poor economy is one of the reasons why card and board gaming is making a comeback, and there are a lot of stories told and interesting people to meet at our events. For more information about MGN, please contact us. We're always looking for publicity for this event. If you know anyone who might be interested in a story, please let us know! |
